GERMAN RESEARCH - Speaker: Robert Jackson
More than 20% of Americans claim primarily German descent and many more have at least one German ancestor. So, where do we begin our quest for our German ancestors? Until we know their specific village of origin, we cannot trace their roots.
In this, the first of two presentations, Mr. Jackson will discuss the challenging task of discovering the hometown of our German ancestors, even if they arrived 150 years ago and then did everything they could to conceal their origins from their descendants.
Robert Jackson is highly regarded as an experienced researcher of the "German Migration" from Germany from 1815 - 1914. He holds a Ph.D. in history and taught for several years at the college level.
At our November meeting, Mr. Jackson will return to our podium to explore techniques for accessing and using original German documents to build our family tree.
Note: The November meeting will also be held on a TUESDAY, the date is November 14th.

Since the 1890 Federal Census was almost entirely destroyed by fire any sources that can help you locate your ancestors in the years between 1880 and 1900 can be extremely useful.
Madeline has many suggestions and finding aids for us in this regard.
We are so happy she will be available and look forward to her informative program.

Plus I will share a simple way to put your ancestor's story into a short biography.
AND, WE ARE HAVING A SILENT AUCTION
Members are urged to donate their unwanted genealogical/history books, etc. they no longer need or want. Bids will begin at 25 cents and increase in 25 cent increments. We will only have quarters and ones for change....Be Prepared.
This would be a good meeting to attend if you are new to genealogy or for our members to bring a friend. All are welcome!

Harris Funeral Home has been in business in Berkeley for over sixty years and has, therefore, volumes of family data stored in those records. They are not only in the mortuary business, but they make a point of keeping "genealogical" records on the families they have served over the years. Wouldn't it be terrific if more mortuaries felt inclined to do the same?
You will be surprised to meet someone from a mortuary that is as interested in family genealogy as we are. Sheila will explain how the staff at Harris Funeral Home traces the families n their files and tell us about the data bases they are creating.
