RECONSTRUCTING FAMILY INFORMATION WHEN YOU START WITH ALMOST NOTHING - A CASE STUDY
Speaker - Janice Sellers

Janice Sellers is a professional genealogist who specializes in newspapers and Jewish research. She is the editor of two genealogy journals and a member of APG, Genealogical Speakers Guild, and San Francisco Bay Area Jewish Genealogical Society. She has volunteered at the Oakland Family History Center for eleven years.

With sparse clues and very little solid information, one wonders where to begin researching their family history. In this case study Janice will demonstrate techniques and sourvcs that enabled a researcher, beginning with only the slimmest of remembered information, to reconstruct six generations of a family that emigrated from Eastern Europe to rural western Pennsylvania in the mid-1800s.

Janice has been on our program before and has been very well received. We are pleased to have her back once again.

OHIO GATEWAY TO THE WEST - Speaker, Richard J. Ferman

Richard Ferman is a graduate of Ohio University with a major in History. He has taught on the High School and College levels and currectly teaches at Willows SeniorNet Learning Center of San Jose. He is retired from IBM where he was an operating system and computer compiler programmer specialized in machine language programming. He is Past President and curent Program Chairman of Santa Clara County Historical and Genealogical Society.

Mr. Ferman has lectured on many aspects of Ohio research. The outline for his program is too extensive to include in this short space; but, be assured, you will gain considerable knowledge of Ohio resources and references that will aid you tremendously in searching your Ohio (and vicinity) ancestors. We appreciate that he is willing to travel some distance to visit us and are looking forward to his program.

"USING THE NEWLY REVISED FAMILY SEARCH WEBSITE" - Speaker, Ralph Severson

Several members have mentioned having difficulty searching the newly revised FamilySearch.org or using the new computer system at the Family History Library.

Help is on the way, folks!

Ralph Severson is the director of the Oakland Family History Library. He will tell us all about the newly revised FamilySearch.org website and how to navigate it for the best results. He will also fill us in on the new Family Search Wiki and upcoming FREE online classes available through Family Search "LEARN".

There are an abundance of new digitized records soon to be available, plus a Family Tree program where everyone can participate. Also, online film ordering will soon be available, much less expensive, and the films will be availale to you for 90 days.

Bring your notebooks! This promises to be a very interesting and informative meeting.

WRITING A BOOKLET ABOUT YOUR ANCESTORS

Speaker will be our member June Lindquist. She will tell us about discovering a large box of papers and documents dating from the 1850s pertaining to a great, great grandfather's life and how this aroused her curiosity and interest in genealogy.

June will explain how she and other family members sorted evidence and proofs into a booklet. She will discuss the convenience of computer sources, computer government sources, and gathering material from far flung and unknown cousins to sketch together family evidence. Great, great grandpa turned out to be quite a colorful character. This is going to be a delightful meeting.

THE BLACK SHEEP IN YOUR FAMILY - Speaker John Shellabear Gleed

It would be an unusual family indeed that had NO Black Sheep. They pique our curiosity and make our family research and stories a little more fascinating, These colorful characters do spice things up.

John Gleed was born in London, England and came to California with his family in
1941. He has been interested in genealogy for thirty years and has been a Patron Server at the Menlo Park Family History Center for the past sixteen years. He defines Black Sheep as a "person who stands out in a negative way". George Bernard Shaw wrote, "If you can't get rid of the Family Skeleton, you may as well make it Dance". John Gleed hopes his presentation will help you make progress in persuading your Black Sheep to Dance!

Nancy is an Oakland native, an award-winning oral historian, filmmaker and writer. She earned a BA in sociology/economics from Mills College in Oakland and a JD from Hastings College of Law in San Francisco. She is the author of "A Legacy of Courage, Pioneering Spirits". She has recorded her family history with the Story Corps Griot Project and the Museum of the African Diaspora Share Your Stories Project.
